Personality Correlates of Burnout Among Primary and Secondary School Teachers

Abstract

The main aim of this study was to examine burnout among primary and secondary school teachers in relation to their personality. For this, 100 primary and 100 secondary school teachers from Govt. Schools of Panipat Distt. of Haryana (ranging in age from 28 to 56 years) participated in the study. Selected teachers were tested with Maslach Burnout Inventory and Neo-Five Factor Inventory. Obtained data were analysed by applying descriptive statistics (Mean, SD, SK, KU), t-ratios, and Pearson’s Correlations. Results revealed  that the primary school teachers scoring significantly high on neuroticism, low on extraversion and conscientiousness than secondary school teachers. Correlational analysis revealed that in both the groups, neuroticism emerged as most significant contributor; and extraversion, agreeableness and conscientiousness as the protectors to the burnout. Findings are almost confirmatory to earlier findings concerning personality correlates of burnout. The present findings have important implications for recruitment process of teachers in schools.
