Empowerment of Women Belonging to Hindu and Muslim Communities in Relation to their Education

Abstract

The present study examined the empowerment of educated and
uneducated women belonging to Hindu and Muslim communities. For
this purpose a sample 240 subjects was drawn from Haldwani city. Out
of 240 subjects 120 subjects were educated (graduate or above), while
remaining 120 subjects were uneducated (below matriculation, but
having the ability to read and write). Among the 120 educated subjects,
30 subjects were belonging to Hindu community, while remaining 60
subjects were belonging to Muslim community. Similarly among 120
uneducated subjects 60 subjects were belonging to Hindu community
and remaining 60 subjects were belonging to Muslim community. They
were administered women empowerment scale developed by Ghufran and
Bisht (2002). The results were analyzed using ANOVA. The results
revealed that the main effects of education and religion of women
subjects on their empowerment were found significant at 0.05 and 0.01
levels of confidence, indicating that educated women were more
empowered than uneducated women and women belonging to Hindu
community were found to feel more empowered as compared to women
belonging to Muslim community.
