Perceived Parenting Styles and Depression: A Study of Adolescent Students

Present study was designed to assess the role of parenting style in depression amongst adolescent students. A sample of 200 adolescent students (100 male and 100 female) of 10th, 11th and 12th standard from government and public schools of Bhiwani and Rohtak districts of Haryana, were administered Parenting Authority Questionnaire-R, and Adolescents Depression Scale. Data were analyzed by multiple regression (stepwise). The results showed that authoritarian parenting style was significant positive predictor of depression and authoritative parenting style was significant negative predictor of depression in adolescents. Implication of the study for parents, teachers and students are discussed.
